About
The Lincroft Zen Sangha is a suburban lay sangha of the Soto Zen Buddhist sect. We began in 1995 as a sitting group that had its roots in two families of the White Plum lineage founded by Taizan Maezumi Roshi in 1967. Our founding members were Bill Nordahl, Peter Nyodo Ott, and Merle Kodo Boyd. Gradually we made the shift from sitting group to sangha, a deep and subtle change that reflects a shift from being a group of people who sit zazen together to being a community of people practicing Zen together with zazen at the core of that practice. We are an affiliate sangha of the Zen Center of Los Angeles, Great Dragon Mountain Buddha Essence Temple.
Our practice is supported by the generosity of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Monmouth County who allow us to sit zazen weekly in the Earth Room of their Meetinghouse.
Our Original Teacher was Roshi Merle Kodo Boyd, Dharma Successor of Roshi Wendy Egyoku Nakao. We have been Sangha led since the passing of Roshi Merle Kodo Boyd in February 2022.
